ABSTRACT
Introdução: Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an acute, immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy affecting the peripheral nervous system. It is primarily characterized by progressive muscle weakness and diminished or absent deep tendon reflexes; sensory alterations and varying degrees of motor impairment may also occur. Objetivo: To characterize cases of Guillain Barré Syndrome treated at the Dr. Ary Pinheiro Base Hospital in Porto Velho, Rondônia, between 2023 and 2025, regarding sociodemographic characteristics, clinical manifestations, associated antecedents, treatment, and clinical outcomes. Materiais e Métodos: This is a descriptive, retrospective study based on the analysis of medical records of nine patients diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome treated at the Base Hospital between 2023 and 2025. The data obtained were organized and analyzed descriptively. Resultados e Discussão: There was a slight male predominance (55.6%), with the highest frequency of patients falling within the 20–39 age group (44.4%). Progressive muscle weakness was recorded in all cases, while paresthesia or sensory alterations occurred in 77.8%, and areflexia was documented in 55.6%. Manifestations involving cranial nerves and bulbar musculature were identified, alongside various clinical variants of the syndrome. Three patients required prolonged mechanical ventilation, and one patient died. Intravenous immunoglobulin was administered in five cases, and plasmapheresis in one. Conclusão: The analyzed cases presented heterogeneous clinical manifestations and courses, ranging from clinical recovery to severe presentations requiring intensive care support. The study made it possible to characterize patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome treated at Hospital de Base, contributing to the understanding of the disease's profile within the regional context.
Key words: Guillain-Barré syndrome; Peripheral neuropathies; Clinical manifestations; Treatment.
